Best databases and the importance of dance specific health service providers.

Boglárka’s recommendation:

In the dance medicine community, everyone knows Ellie Kusner. She is an elite Pilates teacher, dance theoretician, she is frequently publishing in Dance Magazine, she has a podcast, she is educating, working for IADMS and she is doing so much more. But my first direct interaction with her was a heated conversation on racism in the dance industry on a FB group. She opened my eyes and that changed my professional focus in many senses, and I understood the future of dance medicine needs a lot more social awareness. She is one of my role models. I hope you will enjoy her introduction on the topic of dance medicine, you can learn with her about the most reliable sources that are available online to make better decisions on your own health, you will get an insight into the most important organisations for dance medicine and inspiration on the why and when it is worth it to choose a health professional who specialises in dancers.

Biography

Ellie Kusner engaged in professional dance training at The Boston Ballet School, performing regularly in large scale productions at The Wang Center, initially in children’s roles and eventually with the corps de ballet. At The Boston Ballet School, she was introduced to pilates, taking weekly mat classes for almost 10 years.
Ultimately she decided that a career in pointe shoes was not her destiny and attended Barnard College of Columbia University where she studied modern dance as well as literature, architecture, psychology, economics, women’s studies, and much more. After graduating, she worked as a professional freelance dancer, simultaneously supporting her performance career by teaching dance and pilates.
Eager to increase her understanding of the moving body, in 2012 she moved to London, England to pursue an MSc in Dance Science from Trinity Laban. Dance Science is an interdisciplinary field that studies all measurable components of dance, including physiology, nutrition, and psychology.

Back in NYC, fortified with this degree, she investigates the multitude of questions about the body in motion that intrigues her while teaching or performing.

She teaches pilates, modern dance, and ballet and hosts wellness talks throughout the NYC area. She has contributed a number of articles to Dance Magazine, Pointe, Dance Spirit, and Dance Teacher. She is also a co-creator of DanceWell Podcast, a resource that provides 360-degrees of health and wellness content for dancers

She chairs of the Dance Educators’ Committee for the International Association of Dance Medicine and Science.
